Music

Music at Deepdene! As children move through the school, more curriculum time is devoted to music lessons. Singing and instrumental music making is part of the curriculum from Reception onwards and all pupils explore a wide range of untuned and tuned percussion instruments.

Children in Year 2 begin to learn the descant recorder and are introduced to simple notation.

In the Prep School topics have included:

Music of the British Isles – Year 3

Film Music group composition – Year 4

Listening and composing in the Classical Style – Year 5

Songwriting/hooks and riffs – Year 6

We also offer an after school choir which is open to all pupils from Years 1-6. There is no audition and the only requirement is a love for singing!

Individual music lessons are also available for those who wish to further develop their instrumental skills. The following instruments are offered: Piano, Guitar, Singing and Violin. Pupils have worked towards ABRSM and Trinity Music exams with great success. We also offer individual lessons in Music Theory, for pupils wishing to develop further understanding and for those working towards music scholarships to Senior Schools.

Regular concerts and assemblies give all children a performing platform to showcase their talents for family and friends. Performances take place throughout the year in school or in St Leonard’s Church, Hove for larger school musical events.

Nadia Bunker – Teaching Biography – I was born in Brighton and discovered my love for music from a very young age. After leaving school in 1999, I read Music at the University of Birmingham and Birmingham Conservatoire, where I studied Singing with Andrea Calladine and Oboe with Jenni Phillips.

After graduation, I moved back to Brighton and began teacher training on the PGCE Music (Secondary) course at the University of Sussex, gaining Qualified Teacher Status in 2004.

Since then, I have taught Music in various schools across the county, directing choirs, producing musical theatre shows and many concerts involving hundreds of students. For five years, I also led a successful Music department in Brighton and developed singing, instrumental playing and performing within the school.

I very much enjoy nurturing talent in people, instilling a love of music in others and helping students to improve their performance, vocal technique and confidence.

Nadia Bunker – performing biography – As a chorister, my recent performances include Beethoven’s Choral Fantasia and Ninth Symphony with the Orchestre de Picardie in Rouen, solo appearances with the Baroque Collective Singers. I have also performed in Westminster Abbey and York Minster with the Lewes Singers and Bach St John Passion for the Brighton Early Music Festival. I also appeared on tour with the Rambert Dance Company, in Eternal Light Requiem by Howard Goodall.

As a Musical Director, I have conducted performances in The Brighton Dome, The Old Market – Hove, St George’s Chapel, Windsor and Chichester Cathedral. Forthcoming projects include Aladdin with the Peacehaven Players and Make Me a Song for the Brighton Fringe Festival 2016.
